Cleaning chemistry survival

Food line cleaning kills commodity PTFE. Caustic clean in place at 70 to 80 C, chlorinated rinses, and pressure washing at 1500 psi all attack the coating surface. AEGIS coats with a multilayer primer plus top coat system that survives the clean in place cycle without delamination. Is PTFE coating food safe?
Yes. A fully cured PTFE coating is chemically inert and does not react with food, water, or biological materials in normal industrial service. What is food grade PTFE coating?
A food grade PTFE coating is a polytetrafluoroethylene fluoropolymer system formulated and cured to meet FDA requirements for indirect food contact. The coating must be applied using FDA compliant raw materials, cured at the proper temperature, and remain free of pinholes or contamination that could harbor bacteria. Which food processing applications use PTFE coatings?

Service life depends on the operating temperature, the cleaning chemistry, mechanical abrasion, and how aggressively the equipment is used. Most food processing PTFE coatings last 18 to 36 months between recoats in normal service. Lines with aggressive caustic cleaning, high temperature operation, or heavy abrasion may shorten the window. AEGIS documents every job so subsequent recoats are specified against your actual operating history.
What is the difference between PTFE, PFA, and FEP for food contact applications?
All three are FDA compliant fluoropolymers, but they perform differently. PTFE handles the widest temperature range and gives the best release. PFA tolerates aggressive cleaning chemistry better and handles continuous high temperature service.
